A follow up to my December 2018 piece on the Butina case:
Maria Butina has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and
then faces deportation.
I find it particularly noteworthy that her sentence has come
down in the wake of the Mueller Report and the rather stunning defeat and
collapse of the Russian Collusion narrative. The media is doing all it can to
pivot and spin the results of the report. The narrative has (sleight-of-hand
fashion) switched over to obstruction... which indeed Trump has obstructed all
investigations. He's got plenty to hide even if it has nothing to do with some
kind of collusion conspiracy. He's a criminal to be sure but the Russian story
always smelled of deceit and was so bogus that even an official government
commission run by a Deep State operative couldn't make it stick.
But the mainstream hasn't given up. BBC and NPR continue to
pursue the Anti-Russia narrative ad nauseam
and now conveniently Butina is once more in the news. She's to be deported
after her sentence. Will she serve the entire 18 months? I can't seem to locate
a story that reveals how much time she'll actually end up serving. She may
already be eligible for release or as another article indicates she's been
credited with nine months served.
She certainly would be released in other plea cases,
especially one this weak. But of course the timing of her sentencing is suspect
and prosecutors are pushing the national security 'risk' narrative. I have no
doubt that any additional time she serves is due to the politics of the hour
and has little or nothing to do with her case or her actual guilt which
again.... I insist... is virtually negligible. And that's not just opinion.
That's the legal reality. Given the grand narrative of what she was being
accused of, her plea and sentence is about optics and symbolism. It has nothing
to do with security, justice or some kind of prosecutorial vindication. At this
point she'll say whatever they want. She's just trying to get out of the United
States and leave this nightmare behind her.
