Mike Johnson's Corrupt Patriotism and Bogus Christianity

https://newrepublic.com/post/195266/mike-johnson-donald-trump-defense-corruption

This story from May is already outdated but the substance is still pertinent. In addition to his hypocritical defense of the January 6 protesters (especially when compared to the Trumpite faction's rhetoric concerning Los Angeles), Johnson recently spun the incident involving California Senator Padilla at the Kristi Noem press conference. He put the blame on Padilla and suggested he 'charged' the podium - which is pure rubbish and he knows it. The Senator was thrown to the ground and handcuffed - an incident that reminded me of Charles Sumner getting caned on the Senate floor in 1856. These incidents are all pieces of a puzzle that future historians will point to when commenting on the collapse of America and its pending civil war.

Russell Moore Interviewed on NPR and the Growing Evangelical Rejection of Scripture

https://www.npr.org/2023/08/05/1192374014/russell-moore-on-altar-call-for-evangelical-america

I've written repeatedly about Russell Moore over the years and while he's considered in some quarters to be a quasi-'woke' liberal today, at one time he was as right-wing as anyone. I can't say that I've ever been a fan though I do appreciate his stand against Trump – though perhaps for different reasons than his. I will say he appeared the Christian when contrasted with the likes of Franklin Graham, the master and inheritor of a corrupt legacy and 'ministry' machine.

A Travesty in London

https://www.christianpost.com/news/rick-warren-appointed-first-ever-chancellor-of-spurgeons-college.html

Aside from the fact that Rick Warren has a less than robust view of Scripture and is rapidly drifting into theological liberalism, and aside from the fact that he's a corrupt political operative who befriends millionaires and dictators, the truth is he's built his entire clerical career based on a repudiation of Spurgeon's model of preaching and pastoral work.

Moral Character and Public Officials

In 1998, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) released a statement on moral character and public officials. Many will recall this was at the height of tensions between the Clinton administration and the GOP. The Culture Wars were raging and many Evangelicals were in a state of apoplectic rage, convinced that Clinton was a communist determined to bring America down. They and their allies were doing all they could to combat his administration.

Feminism Triumphant in the Evangelical Sphere

https://www.npr.org/2021/04/15/987552105/the-making-of-biblical-womanhood-tackles-contradictions-in-religious-practice

Extra-Biblical ecclesiology, bad hermeneutics, and bad doctrine in general have opened the door to feminism and they are now triumphant in the Evangelical world. So triumphant in fact, that things are beginning evolve.

The Context of Mohler's Embrace of Trumpism

There aren't many voices today that are willing to acknowledge the profound shift that took place within the Christian Right over the past generation. The emphasis of their movement used to focus on character and integrity in political leadership. This was a major focus in their criticism of Bill Clinton. He was an immoral man and unfit for office. The draft-dodging, pot-smoking, ex-hippie philanderer with a feminist wife had marred the dignity of the office.

Paul Washer's Shocking Sermon

I believe Paul Washer to be a gift to the modern church. His passion is compelling. I'm not a Baptist and thus I don't agree with him on every point. At times I'm baffled by his associations. I wonder if he's one of those men that is willing to appear in any venue in order to get the message out. If he's not invited back, clearly he doesn't really care.

Spurgeon on the Unrighteousness of War

A great quote from Charles Spurgeon. Isn't it interesting how when Bible-based Christians are not wielding political power, as indeed Non-conformists in 19th century Great Britain certainly were not, there is no zeal for empire, for conquest, for the 'glory' of the nation. Establishment Christianity whether formal or simply the result of a contrived theological narrative is a poison to the Christian soul. How quickly does it invert the ethics of the Christian Church!
