When Politico is reporting this, it suggests it might be just the tip of the iceberg. It's more than a little ironic that Zelenskiy, the darling of NATO is in fact turning into a Putin-like ruler - crushing his opposition, using the courts to silence and imprison them, and in many ways erecting a regime of fear.
The fact that he was able to take on a billionaire oligarch like the Petro (the Chocolate King) Poroshenko testifies to how much power Zelenskiy has managed to amass over the past four years. And these are just the recent issues being reported on. The list is actually quite long and extends to not just free speech but religious questions as well.
It would seem that it's yet another case of - destroy democracy and liberalism in order to save it. This just further testifies to the fact that the Ukraine War is not about defending Western values, rather it's a strategic move, part of a larger long-term strategy vis-à-vis Moscow. As I've long argued, the contest for Ukraine began long before 2022 or 2014 - it was already well under way by 2004. Western-Atlanticist interests wanted Kuchma out of power and Kyiv to turn toward the West. No one talks about this any more.
Zelenskiy must be thinking ahead to the time when the war actually ends. At that point like so many other war-time leaders he's probably headed for a political fall. It seems he's making his moves to prevent that from happening. How will the West respond? My guess is that there will be an exposé followed by an attempt to blame the war's failings on his mismanagement. A new candidate will be backed, and the page will be turned. It's an oft used ploy in the geopolitical playbook.
