Common Grace, Psychology, and the Ghost of Abraham Kuyper

https://zacharyconover.substack.com/p/the-lie-behind-all-truth-is-gods

In a time when Evangelicals are speaking in materialist terms of anxiety beginning in the hippocampus and resiliency and character being tied to the development of neural networks, we find an equally robust embrace of psychology (which ironically is rather subjective), dealing with concept of 'mind' as much as brain. Though I note that often the two seem to be conflated and confused. I suppose they would say integrated.

The Crisis in the American Church and the Underlying Assumptions (and Worldly Givens) the Church Refuses to Address

https://virgilwalker.substack.com/p/the-sermons-the-church-refuses-to

Once again Virgil Walker manages to raise some valid points and then miss the larger point. Has the modern Church succumbed to worldliness in the realm of gender and family structure? Absolutely, and this is even a problem in circles that otherwise are deemed to be very conservative.

Self-Subversion: Evangelical and Right-wing Feminism

https://www.bbc.com/news/business-65428204

By all accounts, there is a spectrum to modern feminism. Some feminists hate men and turn toward androgyny or ironically to an emulation of masculinity. Other forms of feminism celebrate femininity but it is recast and breaks with older forms and understandings of what that meant – often in forms of libertine expression – a certain conception of womanhood turned up a few notches as it were. Sometimes as a concept it begins to breakdown and blur and even poses as being anti-feminist – and yet ultimately is part of the same cultural subversion that has dismantled the older understandings of womanhood that once prevailed in society and certainly within the Church.

Christian Celebrities and their Fraudulent Testimonies

Why do I have to keep hearing about Kathy Ireland? Why are these people celebrated for their supposed faith? The woman became famous in the 1980's for taking her clothes off. Tame by today's standards, this was a more innocent time and a publication like the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition was a big deal for teenage boys and young men – that was a lot of skin to lust over. It wouldn't even grab anyone's attention today but for years that magazine's annual release was a cultural moment and viewed as scandalous by anyone with a moral compass.

The Danger of Pronoun Confusion

https://familyliferadio.blubrry.net/2022/11/02/22-1102_inside-out_-humility-in-an-age-of-disagreement/

I'm not referring to gender confusion but to the conflation of pronouns when it comes to the Church and the world. All things considered, it's far more concerning than the sodomite rot that now dominates mainstream airwaves.

Idolatry and Spiritual Filth: The Christianity of Richard Land

https://www.christianpost.com/voices/is-the-spirit-of-1776-imperiled.html

In this editorial from The Christian Post, the reprobate militarist and Southern Baptist leader Richard Land continues to beat the drums of war. Land has produced many truly terrible and anti-Christian commentaries over the years. This ranks among the worst. I'm not sure what counterfeit Zion he inhabits but in his idolatrous pseudo-kingdom, the great Christian concern of the hour is whether or not enough young people are going to be willing to take up weapons and kill for the state.

James Dobson's Bloodthirsty Swan Song

https://julieroys.com/james-dobson-calls-for-assassination-vladimir-putin/

Some of us have long known James Dobson to be something of a fool, a would-be politico who envisions himself as not only the Christian Right's stalwart and wise leader, but the great moral discerner of our times – even the Evangelical elder statesman, their version of Winston Churchill. And yet at times the real evil and rot of his heart comes to the surface. This was seen with his recent call for the assassination of Vladimir Putin.

The Family Life Network and the Further Degeneration of Evangelical Radio

Recently I've had the opportunity at work to listen to the radio during the noon hour, something that has largely eluded me for the past year. The Family Life Network (FLN) based in Bath NY continues to expand its listening area and unfortunately this includes the region of Pennsylvania where I live. A typically Evangelical organisation, its theology is light and is mostly geared toward therapy and entertainment-based 'ministries' complimented with copious amounts of trite and terrible Christian pop music.

Usually the only thing I bother with is their news show. And yet having listened very little over the past year (I only occasionally listen to their teaching programmes and I cannot stomach the music), I was struck by how much the organisation has shifted to the Right.

Employing the Accommodationist Triad in the Culture Wars

https://www.vcyamerica.org/crosstalk/2021/03/03/american-heritage-girls/

This is yet another example of the Accommodationist Triad (see below) at work within Evangelicalism. Posing as cultural conservatives and traditionalists, they assume one-time liberal (now Right-wing) arguments in order to score their political victories. And yet the assumptions they have embraced represent a fatal compromise of the very conservative values they claim to uphold. Their arguments are ultimately self-defeating. It's a case of fighting off an acute poison by the utilisation of a long term cancer.

The OPC's Polluted Horizons

https://www.opc.org/nh.html?issue_id=288

I was more than a little disturbed when perusing the January 2021 New Horizons, the magazine of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. As I have explained in the past as a former member of that faction I used to pick a copy every month from the back table of the auditorium and over the years I still keep tabs on the OPC and some of the people I used to know within its ranks.

How Should We Then Live Part 10: Final Choices (I)

This final episode was certainly one of the weakest and most dated – and yet also necessary. Schaeffer attempts to tie things together and make his final appeal. This episode differs from the others in that Schaeffer is not talking about art and culture from the vantage point of historic places and museums. It's mostly just him talking and he more or less keeps falling back on a couple of points crucial to his project. This is what the series has been all about. He wants his audience to take away these crucial applications and he more or less devotes an entire episode to them.

Dallas (DTS) Continues its Fall into Worldliness

Founded during the Fundamentalist-Modernist Controversy, Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) was once a school associated with Fundamentalism, however it abandoned that course long ago. Retaining something of its Dispensational theology, the school now represents mainstream Evangelicalism and the Dominionist Theology that undergirds it.

Suicide and Therapy: Sufficiency Denied and Disparaged

This article came up as a suggested read in light of a 'pastor', one Andrew Stoecklein's suicide. I don't know anything about him, I can only go by what I see and read and to be honest it's not something I'm interested in giving more than a few minutes to.
In one sense I am hardly surprised that such 'Church' leaders are collapsing into scandal and now suicide. And yet who ever heard of such a thing? While the congregation is grieved I'm sure, what a startling thing to realise they were being led by someone so unqualified, so apparently divorced from New Testament Christianity! But so it is with modern Evangelicalism. Its rotten fruit is plain for all to see. Evangelicalism is built on a false foundation. Seeking friendship with the world, they've lost their way and they no longer know what the solutions are. They don't even know what questions to ask.

Sodomy on the March in Spain and the Coming Battles over Gay Conversion Therapy

This law is a cause for concern but it also drives one to reflect on nations like Italy, Ireland and in this case Spain. These nations so long under the influence and at times even domination of the Roman Catholic Church are completing a multi-generational process of undoing and dismantling Rome's legacy and moral teachings.

Parenting, Values and Culture

http://www.rosemond.com/September-2016.html

I don't really know much about the author but his columns often appear in the local newspaper. Sometimes the advice is good and I admit this despite my general hostility to the theological and philosophical underpinnings of psychology and much of the counseling movement.

The Dynamics of Regulating Behaviour

Listening to a recent commentary I was struck by the Christian Right's confusion concerning the role of government with regard to health care.
On the one hand they're vehemently opposed to government regulation in terms of pricing and/or the government legislating access.
But on the other hand most of them want the government to regulate pharmaceuticals and who has access to them.
