Violence, Pacifism, and Straw Men

https://theaquilareport.com/a-consideration-of-certain-of-the-pope-of-romes-remarks-on-palm-sunday/

I both agree and disagree with Hervey regarding the pope's statement - 'God, who always rejects violence'.

Prevost/Leo made what could be described as a sloppy statement. It needs clarification.

Bircher-Dispensationalism's Twisted Reading of Providence

https://www.vcy.org/crosstalk/2026/02/16/presidents-politics-prophecy/

Sometimes I can't help myself. Given my background and upbringing in Fundamentalist and Dispensational circles, I do like to 'check in' every once in awhile and see what's being talked about and how the issues are framed.

Another Example of Theonomy's Rejection of Romans 13

https://www.trex-arms.com/

I was looking at the website of one of Scott Brown's upcoming conferences on Christian Entrepreneurship. It was the usual fare from these Agrarian-Dominionist Theonomic types. I've seen it all before. I decided to look up the background and credentials on the speakers and I noticed one has the last name of Botkin which is well known in those circles. The Botkin girls in particular have generated a great deal of attention.

Heresy in Oklahoma

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/09/oklahoma-amends-request-for-bibles-that-initially-appeared-to-match-only-version-backed-by-trump-00182997

The original request made by Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters was for Bibles that included the Pledge of Allegiance, Constitution, and Declaration of Independence. The scandal in the media played up the fact that this seemed to be an order for Trump Bibles.

A Timely and Encouraging but Awful Sermon

Recently I heard a sermon which I continue to think about. Based on a section of Psalm 119, the visiting speaker did a decent job moving through the passage verse by verse and exhorted the congregation to focus on Scripture, make it central to your life, meditate on it, and so forth. So far so good.

The 2023 Gaza War – Some Initial Thoughts and Observations

In reference to the recent attacks based out of Gaza, I found it very interesting that a Hamas spokesman mentioned a movement to re-establish the Solomonic Temple as one motivation among others. That's not something you're going to typically hear in the mainstream media.

Clashing Dominionisms: Kuyperian Two-Kingdom Theology versus Theonomy

https://theaquilareport.com/thoughts-on-the-churchs-true-nature-and-mission-a-partial-rejoinder-to-larry-balls-challenge-to-the-spirituality-of-the-church/

I post this with a few comments just to call attention to the kind of Two Kingdom Theology which needs to be rejected and opposed. It caught my eye because the author (Tom Hervey) was critical of Larry Ball, a Theonomist writer I have countered on many an occasion. Happy to see someone answering him, I was nevertheless mostly disappointed in Hervey's response.

The Counsels of Mammon (II)

https://churchandfamilylife.com/podcasts/6390cc89fad8bafe3a9ec787

At about the twelve minute mark we come to:

5. Be on a Budget

Budgets are very helpful, but contrary to the narrative being provided, there are people who spend years trying to get that money set aside for tires or whatever and can never get there. Life keeps happening and because the margins are too tight, they can't meet those goals. Others have volatile incomes – shift workers whose hours change every week, or those who are self-employed. A sickness can throw everything off and then while you're trying to get it back on track – a car repair comes up that you can't pay for. Sometimes it can take months to get back on track, but by then something else has likely happened. These people are not necessarily doing anything wrong – they're simply struggling.

Evangelical Disobedience and the Courts

https://www.christianpost.com/news/usps-can-require-christian-to-work-on-sundays-court-rules.html

This is a case of worldly thinking being passed off as Christianity applied. It's more rights-based ethics – file a lawsuit and call on the state to compel your employer to give you what you want. It's an abnegation of gospel testimony, an attempt to wed Christianity to the power of the state. And this thinking is the result of Dominionism, the utter confusion of the True Kingdom that calls us to take up the cross with a counterfeit kingdom that seeks to sanctify the world and its hallmarks – the sword and the coin. Bow to its ethic and its fallen prince will grant you the kingdoms of the earth. This is how far removed from the New Testament this doctrinal and ethical system is.

Stonestreet and the Hermeneutics of Nationalism

https://www.breakpoint.org/is-it-biblical-to-honor-our-nation/

Evoking the memory of the apostate Richard John Neuhaus, BreakPoint commentator and Colson protégé John Stonestreet attempts to address the dangers of idolatry regarding nationalism, and yet in keeping with patterns often seen in his commentaries he misses the central point and falls into error.

Rather than seriously seek to limit or warn concerning the dangers of nationalism, he in fact encourages it and blurs the lines that already cloud contemporary Evangelical thought.

Prophecy Expert Jimmy DeYoung, Vaccines, and the Mark of the Beast

The Dispensationalist teacher Jimmy DeYoung died in August of Covid-19. I had listened to him on and off for years. His programme appeared on the local Evangelical radio station and it seemed like many times we were in the car when it aired. I took great exception to his teachings. Misunderstanding the Bible on a massive scale, the outworkings of his aberrant theology took a particularly bad turn when it came to political Zionism and support for the often violent Settler movement in the West Bank, and Likud policy in general.

Christ the Flag-Burner

https://www.vcyamerica.org/crosstalk/2021/06/14/u-s-flag-under-attack/

Every once in awhile I grit my teeth and listen to an episode of this radio programme that represents a fusion of John Birch Society-inspired ideology and Protestant Fundamentalism. Not everything on the show is bad but most of it is and some episodes are certainly worse than others.

This episode (linked above) was one of the bad ones. The entire discussion is rooted in a false premise and as such the whole discussion goes off the rails.

AFR: Blind Guides of the American Evangelical Movement

A couple of weeks ago I was driving about an hour south of where I live and picked up American Family Radio (AFR). As bad as the Family Life Network is, I must say AFR is perhaps worse, or at least more overtly political. Every time I've tuned in, its airwaves propagate Scriptural error and bad politics rooted in the network's bad theology.

Sacralism and Secularism in Morocco

This article demonstrates the true evil of sacralist culture, Christian, Muslim or otherwise. It's evil because it's Bestial, seeking to control and delineate every aspect of life and demands all citizens and residents conform to the state's form of worship.

The Judaizing and Anti-Covenantal Nature of so-called Sacred Architecture

This represents another sad instance of the Colson crowd's faulty understanding of the gospel. Their grasp of Scripture is defective and in this case... painfully on display.
People are being converted by architecture? Apparently the Word is not required! Apparently being inspired by stonework and having a rapturous experience is enough to lead someone to conversion?

Dead vs. Living Stones

While I'm not endorsing this website, this article recently brought to my attention is a good read.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was teaching on 1 Peter 2 and thinking about the Temple Mount and the Wailing Wall. It struck me in light of the passage that these people are putting their faith in dead stones. The image is striking to me. Our Temple is made of living stone and it must be contrasted with these dead ones. Judaism's devotion to a temple of dead stone is the basis of their rejection of the Messiah. The doctrine of the Living Temple, the very person of Jesus Christ becomes a stumblingblock and occasion for offense.
