Though outlets like Netflix and the Western media in general continue
to tout the Syrian White Helmets, not a few in the West are on to them and
continue to challenge their origin, actions and narratives. Along with the UK
based (and largely fraudulent) Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) the
White Helmets have played a major role in the Western shaping of the Syrian War
narrative.
And yet investigative reporters continue to discover that
opinions on the ground are quite different. Many Syrians don't know who the
White Helmets are and have openly challenged their narratives.
One would think the US-allied Kurds would be happy to work with
them as the White Helmets are supposedly allies fighting for a common cause.
And yet the Kurds have been betrayed more times than can be
counted and though they keep going back to working with the United States, they
don't dare trust them or their proxies. Many believe there are Islamists
embedded within the White Helmets and undoubtedly the Kurds fear the gathering
of intelligence and betrayal.
As the US slowly turns away from the Syrian conflict, there's
always the possibility that Turkey could step in... and establish even stronger
ties with the White Helmets and those behind them. The Kurds know this and thus
utterly reject their offers of 'aid'.
All of this flies in the face of the Western narrative that
paints the White Helmets as altruistic humanitarians. They are political and
even paramilitary agents involved in subterfuge and propaganda. Our media won't
tell the story but the Kurds know the truth.
What is perhaps most disturbing is that figures associated
with this shadowy and frankly deceptive organisation have been 're-located' in
Canada, the UK and the EU.
