Last month, Romney: A Reckoning was published, a biography by McKay Coppins of The Atlantic. In connection with this, there were reports concerning the fact that Romney was warned beforehand about January 6 and tried to reach out to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell – who refused to speak to him.
There have been various interviews in connection with this book by those involved and those who report on Congress. Even PBS recently ran a Frontline episode about Mitch McConnell in which some of these topics came up.
It would seem Romney is willing to burn some bridges as he heads off into the sunset of retirement and yet none of this speaks well of him either. I already didn't think much of him considering he has basically made his fortune by means of exploiting others and profiting from inflicting pain on them – for the sake of making a buck. He's not a moral person and if he had really been alarmed over what was happening in the government both with Trump and the GOP – why didn't he raise these points immediately? Why wait until it's safe? What did he have to lose? He's already rich. Does he really care about the country? Maybe to a point, but not to the point of his own discomfort, let alone hurt.
Leaving Romney aside (and good riddance), we can say that he testifies to the fact that GOP leaders are knowingly misleading their constituents about Trump. They dislike him, don't respect him and yet cover for him because they care more about their positions than the truth.
And clearly there were sections within the government – the FBI, intelligence agencies, and the Secret Service, that knew about January 6. They knew something was going to happen, that there would be an insurrection – a coup attempt. And yet they didn't act.
Why are none of them being held to account? What about the people in congress who had knowledge and collaborated? We know that some of the rioters had inside knowledge.
The authorities have gone after all the pawns, they are (in part) going after Trump – but everyone else is getting a pass. But there's no Deep State.
Again, I am somewhat astonished at how stupid these Right-wing militia people are. Do they not realize they were betrayed? I'm surprised they're not targeting those who betrayed them.
More could be said about the significant evidence (long before January 6) testifying to the fact that law enforcement was working with groups like The Proud Boys and others. The police used them to rough up protestors and in other cases drive crowds into bottlenecks with police in riot gear waiting on the other end.
There's so much more to the story. Will McConnell be held accountable? No, he'll retire soon or die and they'll name naval ships after him, airports, highways and probably some other buildings as well. His long and disgraceful legacy of corruption will be swept under the rug.
And in the meantime people (and the media) can focus on Romney and his political career – his lonely days in Washington – apparently his wife had no interest in being with him.
In the meantime the real and critical issues that actually represent a threat to this country's supposed democracy, the issues which if pursued would reveal the real inner workings of the state and its circles of power – these critical questions are sidestepped, ignored, and swept under the rug.
