As a Christian I will not be thanking veterans today. I am a
veteran who is ashamed. I did not defend your freedom. I did not serve America.
I was a stooge and part of a cult and a murder machine. When God saved me He
also opened my eyes to the idolatry of Nationalism which as a pagan had gripped
my heart and afflicted my conscience.
As a new Christian it really hit me that a Roman convert
would not celebrate the 'service' of the legions. First century Christians
would not encourage soldiers to stand up and be honoured in the holy assembly.
Christians would not sing songs to praise Rome or Babylon. So what happened?
This question prompted a long search into theology and
history and my own past and understanding. Praise God as one born again I came
to position of challenging everything I had ever been taught. It was eye
opening.
For those who wish to reconsider or perhaps even for the
first time consider what we call Veteran's Day, I provide the following links.
The truth often proves offensive. Should we expect any
different?
My whole project consistently revisits the issues
surrounding the idea of Christian Nationalism. I would argue that is nothing
less than apostasy and represents one of the great heresies of all time.
As Christians our primary message to veterans is simple... Repent!
I also recommend the works of Lawrence Vance when it comes
to this topic of Christians and the military. I don't agree with many of his
views beyond this immediate topic but when it comes to this issue he's right
on. A lot of his writings appear on Lew Rockwell's site.
Thanks for this. It's a hard yet blessed road to leave the cult of americana and empire behind. I thank God for your writings and the wisdom spoken through you as I unpacked my own experiences and idolatries.

Here's another relevant and helpful link on this topic. Ben Smith provides a helpfully arranged series of topics... good for contemplation or discussion. Each one warrants extensive treatment.
ReplyDeleteWhile I'm late in getting to it (as it's now December) the issues are relevant year-round... especially in the United States where it seems like praising the troops has become a permanent ritual.
