Congo's Eastern Provinces

Congo is moving toward another open conflict and like the previous episodes it will likely involve the surrounding nations. The instability in the Eastern provinces of Ituri, North and South Kivu and Tanganyika (formerly part of Katanga) is escalating and not a few commentators are using terms like 'ticking time bomb'.

It's being fueled by outside interests, seeking control of these resource-rich provinces. Congo shares an unfortunate reality with Syria. It is strategically positioned so that many of the regional powers as well as global interests have a stake in the fight.
Unlike Syria, Congo is not part of a larger geo-political struggle. This isn't the Middle East. This isn't part of the Anti-Russia campaign. But Congo is a rich land. Its minerals are desired by all and some want to control them just so others cannot have them. A new Third Congo War will certainly involve proxies representing the Anglo-American Alliance, China, France and other regional powers that seek to carve out a degree of autonomy and strategic advantage. A lot of Middle Eastern money has been flowing into the periphery of the Sahara. While Congo is part of Sub-Saharan Africa it won't take much for the conflicts to overlap.
God help the people of Congo.

  1. I'm sure Kabila is nervous that the trouble will lead to another Ugandan/Rwandan invasion. It will be the 2nd Congo War all over again with another Kabila dead.
