For years those on the Right have expressed nothing less than
hatred and disdain for the likes of Al Sharpton. An opportunist, a
grand-stander, the civil rights activist and largely self-styled 'reverend'
seems to appear on the scene any time there's a controversy or some social
issue related to race. If there's a shooting, he's there. A lawsuit to be
filed? Sharpton is usually standing next to the family. He's respected among
his community and by some outside of it – and yet to many, even those who
support minority civil rights – Sharpton seems like an opportunist, even an
exhibitionist. He's made his celebrity and his seeming ubiquity into a lucrative
career.
Sarah Palin's recent appearance in Dallas as a Far
Right/Libertarian activist to combat the 'Stay at Home' orders and to argue for
the 'opening up' of the American economy reminds one of Sharpton. After failing
to secure a position in the Trump organisation, she has seemingly fallen on
hard times. James Dobson tried to give her a boost and yet her ventures into
television and politics have failed. Her glory days of 2008-2012 are long past
and by 2015 her opportunistic wells and sources of revenue were starting to run
dry. She attempted to rekindle her political standing in 2016 but failed.
Since then she seems desperate to re-capture her former
'glory'. While she still has her Evangelical supporters, their numbers are too
small for her to attain the fame and fortune she wants. Her marriage has
collapsed and recently she was reduced to performing a filthy rap song on a
talent show.
Maybe now she's found her niche. Taking her cues from the
likes of Sharpton, Palin appeared in Dallas and made as much noise as she could
about the salon owner who had been jailed for defying 'mandatory closure'
orders. Palin grabbed some headlines and has now taken credit for the court's
reversal of the jailing. You can be sure she will take note of the results and the
media attention and I expect her to start appearing at the scene of every
controversy that is of Right-wing interest. Sharpton has become a household
name and is a millionaire – which is clearly what Palin wants. Every time we
think she's gone for good – she keeps coming back.
