What a mess. I filed this commentary away over a month ago.
To be candid it's pretty worthless but reading it I had to laugh at the total
incongruity and dissonance on display in the argument.
Parker is like Thomas Sowell and so many others. Because
she's Black and willing to push the Right-wing line, she's an instant star.
See, there's no racism in the GOP. It's those Democrats. After all it was the
Southern Democrats who supported Jim Crow and the like.
It's these same kind of lame arguments that grant Parker her
place. She has nothing to say. She's a syndicated columnist because the Right
pushes and promotes her and the Right-Establishment loves to have minorities
promoting their lines and narratives in order to discredit the arguments being
made by the mainstream media and academia regarding the racist and Far-Right
characteristics of Right-wing policies.
They can rail against Affirmative Action but in truth, that's
why she's there. That was also the great irony in the Clarence Thomas
nomination back in 1991.
But one line really made me laugh. Rolling through a litany
of social evils all promoted by the pro-Capitalist, pro-Imperialist 'Left', she
mentions that 'sanctity of life was devalued with Roe v. Wade'. And then in her
very next breath she (by implication) condemns the end of conscription. Apparently
she cannot grasp that the militarism that comes with a culture of conscription
is literally dehumanising and it leads to conflict. It promotes violence and
celebrates it – turning into a cheapening of life and a denigration of those
the state has decided to reckon as enemies – which as often as not is guided by
politics as opposed to ethics. Look for example at the recent (and continuing)
campaign against not just the Russian state but the Russian people and their
culture, let alone Yemen, and at least half a dozen other places. For the Right
to speak of the 'sanctity of life' is ridiculous.
Parker equates conscription with personal responsibility or
what she really means is 'investment' in the state and its system.
On the one hand I can say 'whatever' and dismiss the
ramblings of yet another lost person but Parker (and many like her) often put a
Christian gloss on their commentaries. This makes her and those like her
dangerous and much more critically dangerous to the Church as many Christians
fall prey to her false reasoning and sometimes ridiculous argument.
Not everything she says is wrong but that's the dangerous
part. Enough is right that it grants her credibility and standing and yet her
commentaries, indeed her thinking are fundamentally in error and this is on
full display in her celebration and promotion of Right-wing ethics.
It's just rubbish but it sells and tickles ears and so
Right-wing newspapers like the one that serves my area will run her column.
