High Corruption on the High Court

I remember listening to the confirmation hearings for Alito back in January 2006 on NPR. I also recall being less than impressed, especially when compared to John Roberts who had undergone the same process just a few months earlier.

Since then Alito's record has been one of largely politicised and agenda-driven jurisprudence - an 'activist' judge in every sense. Additionally he's also been tied to numerous accusations of demonstrable corruption - only surpassed by Clarence Thomas - a man that was never qualified, the product of Affirmative Action, corrupt, and will deservingly go down in history as one of the worst justices in US history up to this point.

The Supreme Court lacks any practical checks and balances as well as accountability. It is a glaring example of the US Constitutional order's short-comings, a major oversight on the part of the Founders. To be fair, it was ill-defined and within the first generation of its existence it had (by some estimations) already migrated from its original purpose. But that was over two hundred years ago, and while Congress can act, it has only attempted to do so one time - when impeachment charges were drawn up against Samuel Chase in 1805. The effort failed to get the 2/3 vote in the Senate, and he retained his seat.

I've listened for years to audio clips of Alito during oral arguments and in addition to being rude and something of a bully, he has always come across as corrupt and highly biased - in other words not a serious judge and one lacking the gravitas for such high office.

I made up my mind about Alito years ago and I wouldn't bother writing now except for the fact that I keep running into promotions for Mollie Hemingway's new book: Alito: The Justice Who Reshaped the Supreme Court and Restored the Constitution - a title which makes me guffaw and snicker at the same time. The very premise of her title is a prima facie absurdity but I expect as much from The Federalist as well as the other rags she and her husband have been associated with.

Unfortunately because Hemingway is a devout member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, she gets constant and respectful play on programmes such as LPR's Issues Etc.

And as is so often the case, she's another feminist who promotes herself as anti-feminist, a self-described conservative who actually is (in reality) an advocate of Right-wing politics, not actual social conservatism.

As editor she has worked assiduously to promote Trump's election fraud myths - which are politically subversive. The Federalist is also a vehicle for a great deal of disinformation and as such I guess we shouldn't be surprised that she's produced this book on Alito - a farcical and fantastical case of hagiography and revisionist reporting.

I wouldn't care except for the fact that so many Christians look up to this woman as some kind of Christian ideal.

And in connection to that, many erroneously view Alito as a man of integrity and Christian values - which he is not.

I am reminded of the situation described in Jeremiah 5 - these are signs of judgment and apostasy.

This recent Guardian article typifies the problematic nature of Alito's approach to jurisprudence and his repeated refusal to recuse himself from cases in which he has a vested interest. It reeks of corruption, but Alito clearly doesn't care and make it abundantly clear that he holds anyone who questions him in complete contempt. He is a friend to big business, but especially the energy industry. And like Thomas he seems more than willing to accept gifts from hedge fund billionaires. Alito scoffs at the notion that Congress should have any oversight with regard to the court. His power has clearly gone to his head.

No doubt he has been emboldened by his fellow justice Clarence Thomas who not only should be impeached but should spend the rest of his days in prison. And what should we think of Christians who turn a blind eye to such things? The message seems pretty clear - the end justifies the means. If Alito will push the agenda, then all illegality, deception, and disinformation are justified.

This is how the Kingdom of God is built on Earth - or so they think. All they're building is a counterfeit, another Babel.
