Accountability at the Vatican Bank

Some will celebrate this news. It's a watershed moment in the history of the IOR (Vatican Bank). Many will herald this conviction as a historical moment in which the Vatican Bank 'turned the page' and left behind its decades long history of corruption.

And yet there are other ways to look at it. This particular indictment is actually relatively unimportant and the conviction, while newsworthy only contributes to a perception of reform and transparency. The Vatican itself can point to this and argue that 'something' is being done. And yet what is being done?
Those familiar with the history of the bank know full well that a full accounting has never been given and only a full accounting will really remedy past wrongs as well as provide a basis for true reform.
It's not going to happen. It's impossible. The only way any of the information could ever get out would be through clandestine leaks. Some have talked and some information has gotten out over the years but proving it is something else entirely. The IOR was for years the laundry for CIA secret wars, the mafia and a host of other dictatorships, weapons traffickers and for billions upon billions of dollars in drug money. When one understands the background to the IOR's creation as well as Vatican machinations in the decades following WWII, it makes perfect sense. That is, it makes sense why these forces utilised the Vatican. It was (from their perspective) the perfect means to clandestinely launder vast sums of money.
Such documented revelations (if the documents even exist) would not only compromise the Western order it would be a bridge too far for the Vatican. Already mired in a host of filthy scandals, the true nature of Vatican Inc. would destroy the already shaky faith of many. Additionally many secrets would be revealed and the 'sainted' Wojtyła aka John Paul II would be revealed for what he was... corrupt and morally compromised. He spent more time obscuring and covering tracks than he did trying to take on any of the corruption within the Vatican.
Francis spoke of trying to take on the curia and by all accounts he's made some enemies and shaken things up a bit... but only a bit. And that's probably as far as he's going to get. Any further and he will meet a grim fate. And yet it's clear he has tried to take the long view and has attempted to reshape the College of Cardinals, hoping (perhaps) that reform will come in papacies subsequent to his own.
The EU will continue to put pressure on the bank but given that the Vatican is a sovereign state and that no nation is willing to cut of Rome entirely, there's only so much that can be done.
From my standpoint it matters little. For every bank that is 'reformed' or closed two more will open. The various Deep State institutions require these types of banks and they'll do what they have to in order to form them. From a Christian perspective even transparent banking is still ethically dubious as is the whole system of finance capital. You can polish up excrement but it's still what it is as are those who work in these institutions and profit from them.
I'm interested because the information is invaluable in understanding the nature of entities such as the Vatican as well as the Western Deep State(s) and their (often cozy) relationships with organised crime. The Vatican has long been at the heart or nexus of these relationships.
