The Falwells: Two Dirty People

Months, even years ago it was clear to me that something was amiss with Jerry Falwell Jr. In all sincerity based on his actions and his words, I didn't believe him to be a genuine Christian. And this was before we learned he was some sort of unrepentant pervert.

The stories were coming out about a secret and hypocritical lifestyle. He's not the 'Christian leader' that many seem to think him to be. He's a power-mad opportunist who has abandoned conscience and fallen into sociopathic and megalomaniacal-type behaviour – which often leads to deviancy. I use these terms loosely as one critical of psychological attempts to technically define such terms. What I'm referring to is a person who acts without conscience, who lives by a credo other than what he professes and judges others by, and one who has an over-inflated view of himself. These often go to together in a sort of character bundle and many of us know such people. There are degrees to this formula and yet such people when empowered with fame and fortune can turn into monsters.
Things go wrong. Things inside, within one's heart. The mundane no longer satisfies. Thrill seeking, pushing the envelope become the norm and it plays out in all facets of life.
The megalomania which was undoubtedly fueled by his friendships with powerfully connected people led him to believe he wasn't going to get caught and exposed. And yet clearly people knew there was something wrong, something not only with the corrupt culture of Liberty University but with Falwell himself. There is another angle I'm sure some could explore regarding the son and the father and what happened there. Falwell Sr. was also corrupt and woefully misguided with regard to the Scripture but I've never heard any suggestion of perversity or this kind of depravity.
What depravity? His wife had an affair, right?
It's not that simple, even though Falwell and Christian media are attempting to spin the story. For the moment he's thrown his wife under the bus – putting all the blame on her, and she's sticking with him as there's a multi-million dollar severance in the offing. If he can keep the narrative simple and clean he can re-emerge in a few years. They can even start a 'troubled marriage' ministry or something to that effect. Or as one commentator suggested – he'll have a job working for the Trump television news and entertainment channel that's sure to emerge once he's out of office.
But if the larger story comes out it will reveal just how far the Falwells have fallen. There were rumours floating around many months ago of pictures of his wife – not just inappropriate but odd pictures and of course the other question is – who took them?
The story that's being hidden is that not only was there an affair – it wasn't clandestine. Falwell knew what his wife was doing and he (in some capacity) was a participant. The 'pool boy' was a family intimate, part of their life and the affair was not really a secret relationship between the Mrs. and the young man, but a consensual perverse arrangement in which Falwell Jr. played the voyeur. There are obvious deep problems at work here in both the marriage and with regard to both his (and his wife's) character.
If this comes out, then they're ruined. Ted Haggard tried to make a comeback and somewhere he's got some kind of 'ministry' going but the level of his depravity and hypocrisy was such that he's basically done – and rightly so. The same is true of Falwell. He may not be a sodomite (at least as far as we know at the present) but his perversity is in the same spectrum. He has no business being engaged in any kind of Christian leadership or ministry. He needs to repent and if he's spinning the story rather than coming clean – then truly, he is to be pitied because once again it indicates just how lost he is.
There are the additional angles regarding dubious real estate deals of questionable morality, Falwell's sudden and rather zealous endorsement of Trump – which may or may not have been connected to Michael Cohen's services as a fixer, and Falwell's other bizarre and sometimes scandalous behaviour. The man obviously has some serious problems as his perversion ranges into areas that even most lost people would consider to be 'weird' and especially perverse.
I had a feeling the Falwell story would end badly. I knew there was something really wrong with this guy back during the early days of the 2016 election. Every time his name comes up I am reminded of the All in the Family episode 'The Bunkers and the Swingers'. Edith inadvertently invites a swinging couple to the house but neither she nor Archie know what they're about. When it finally becomes clear, Archie declares, "We've got two dirty people here!"
So it is with the Falwells. By all indications she's a flagrant and brazen whore and he's some kind of lowlife deviant. By all indications neither of them is genuinely repentant but are engaged in damage control. These are the actions of lost people – people in deep bondage to sin.
Once again the Evangelical movement has disgraced itself and has become the world's laughingstock. Falwell Jr. like so many other Evangelical leaders has given the world cause and occasion to blaspheme Christ. Let us hope that they repent but we can also hope that this brings down the evil colossus that is Liberty University with its legacy of political machinations, corruption and heresy. The school is little more than a propaganda mill and Dominionist factory and its reputation is deservedly bad – in other words they are despised not for the gospel but for strengthening the hands of those that would do evil. Because of them the way of truth is evil spoken of.
The movement is under judgment. Once again I would advise people to 'come out from among them' and 'partake not' in their 'sins' – this Babylonish pseudo-Church. Return the New Testament and ponder anew the nature of the Gospel and the Kingdom.
