Evangelicalism is in a sad state of affairs when the likes of Candace Cameron are held up as leaders - and editors such as Richard Land continue to give them press.
The feminist Cameron has already engaged in risque behaviour and her career choices and associations are at best dubious.
Now she's garnered attention for producing a strange video in which she dances in a seductive manner lip-syncing to a Lana Del Rey song - which if you know who that is, that alone is enough to raise one's eyebrows.
Then Cameron produces a Bible and integrates it into her strange and offensive act.
She caught some flak for this performance (for that's what it is) and yet it's clear from the online comments that most seem keen to defend her conduct - such is the state of confusion in American Evangelicalism.
Then out of curiosity I went to her Tik-Tok page and that's when my eyes bulged out of my head. I had to fetch my wife and get her opinion.
Basically we can safely say that Candace Cameron is a whore. Her page is filled with videos of her scantily dressed and dancing about in a provocative manner. In addition to the sheer immorality of her conduct one cannot be but in a state of wonder at the narcissism on display. It's over the top. She's obsessed with herself and with the idea that she would be lusted after. No Mary or Martha, she's a would-be siren, a Lorelei, a Venus desirous of homage and lust. It's also quite sad as it's also clear she's desperate to hang on to 'it' even as age creeps up on her. The youthful sexpot image she wants to cultivate is becoming ever more difficult and pathetic.
Is whore to strong a term? A person who compromises their moral principles (especially in the realm of sex) for gain and is willing to effectively sell themselves meets the definition. One must grant the term encompasses something of a spectrum but she falls within its shadow to be sure.
If not a whore then she's certainly what previous generations would have referred to as a hussy. She is shameless and disreputable as opposed to being shamefaced - which happens to be the New Testament teaching. The fact that most Evangelicals have rejected these teachings is evident and demonstrated by her popularity.
Additionally one might reflect on another lost doctrine, that of mortification. We're all hypocrites who wrestle with our sin and as such there is shame, repentance, and a desire to change. But in the case of Cameron, there is no shame to be found.
Drunk on fame and self-obsessed, she clearly desires to be worshiped and lusted after. That's not mortification, that's affirmation of the sinful nature. That's not sanctification, it's profanation, an affirmation of the profane. And no surprise. She is in many ways a victim of Evangelicalism and its degeneration, though I think she's old enough to know better, to remember another time (before the 1990's) when even worldly Evangelicals knew better.
Sadly we must say she is a woman who should be under church discipline and is in desperate need of pastoral correction. Instead she is held up by Richard Land and those like him as a Christian leader. So desperate to have Christian celebrities who 'influence' culture they are more than willing to wink at sin and the various scandals of Cameron. They do have their lines though. Sarah Palin's obscene conduct on Masked Singer was apparently a bridge too far. Though she made the national news, the Evangelical 'news' hypocritically chose to ignore her. Apparently they were ashamed of her and rightly so.
How far will Cameron have to go before someone finally says - enough.
