Some Resources on the Question of Voting and Christian Participation in Government

Given the furore over the 2026 Mid-term elections and the drive to push Christians into the voting booth, I decided to quickly put together some links to recent and past writings regarding the question of Christian participation in this largely pseudo-democratic rite.

The campaign being waged on Christian radio and online is relentless and manipulative - charging Christians with sin if they refuse to vote and then at the same time manipulating the questions in a way that forces them to vote for the GOP.

I realize that many Christians, even many that read my writings are going to vote. So be it. At that point I would argue they should ignore the disingenuous noise and when considering local races - remember that in the end, your local politicians aren't going to have any kind of effect on the big policy issues that garner all the attention. As such, don't listen to the people that say you have to vote for the GOP because of abortion when often the real issues at stake are about local spending, land usage, data, centers, infrastructure or whatever. In rural areas we're seeing hospitals close and yet it's also clear the GOP representatives are in the pockets of the health-care monopolies and insurance companies. They represent them and not the local people and their interests. If I were to vote, I would keep that in mind. Even if these GOP figures are against abortion, they're corrupt and on many other issues stand for morally dubious positions.

For my part, I won't vote for any of them. The whole system is rotten as are its assumptions. I'm not looking to get ahead, or to have standing. Nothing will fix this broken society and the calls for Christian renewal won't either because despite their claims they're not rooted in Scripture but in fact reject New Testament teaching at critical points.

We're here to bear witness, something we are unable to do when we join with a faction, or wave a flag. But if you do vote (for whatever reason), then vote out of love of neighbour and concern for community - you'll be choosing the lesser of the evils (which is still to choose evil), but don't allow charlatans to frame the issues and debate.

Back when I did vote, I usually protest-voted, voting against incumbents, for third parties and the like. Since I lived in a state with elected judges (an absurdity that undermines the judiciary), I voted against every incumbent. I realized it was all a waste of time and eventually decided my participation was a tacit endorsement of the systems, its assumptions, and its values. That's when I quit voting and so now contrary to the argument that says if you don't vote, you can't complain - on the contrary I realized that if you do vote, you cannot complain. After all, the people have spoken. But if you refuse to vote, refuse to use the courts, refuse to rely on the police, refuse to aid the judiciary (by sitting on a jury), refuse the public schools, refuse enlistment in the military, and refuse to worship the symbols of state or pledge allegiance to them - then you have some standing to speak, to protest (not politically), and to proclaim.

So before you vote on Tuesday, read one or more of these pieces and weigh what's being said vis-à-vis the New Testament.
