Front National: The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat

An interesting turnaround to be sure. The Front National went down in defeat in the second round. Few would have predicted that.

What does it mean? They will be talking about until the next election or the next terror attack.

I take it as a nation that's getting nervous. The Europeans have a better sense of history than we Americans do. The trends in Europe are disturbing and France like many other nations has an ugly underside and unreconciled baggage from World War II. The Right is on the rise but many are not ready or willing to go down that road.

Jean-Marie Le Pen failed to win the presidency in 2002. It was a defeat, but one that shook the nation and paved the way for his daughter to rise. The FN was defeated in 2015 but will this 'almost' result in further gains in subsequent years?

Right now Marine Le Pen is being written off as a serious contender for 2017. Maybe, but we'll see what 2016 brings.
