For those following the twists and turns of the
Ukraine-Russia saga this piece was helpful in that it provided something of a
chronological framework for the fascist movements in Ukraine.
Why did the Washington Post seemingly switch gears and
suddenly acknowledge what many in the alternative media have been saying for
years? That the Euromaidan uprising was fueled (at least in part) by Neo-Nazis
and subsequent to the 2013 uprising (or coup) the Far Right has played a
relatively prominent role in shaping the Ukrainian government.
The history might have been different if the Berlin Wall had
come down one or two decades later. In 1989 there were still many people alive
from the World War II era including many figures associated with the fascist
movements of the time. In some cases these figures were directly involved in
resurrecting these movements. In other cases they served as living breathing
icons which helped to inspire the development of new fascist movements.
From Central Europe to the Balkans and Ukraine we have seen a
resurgence of fascism. Martin Lee wrote about this in the 1990's and others
have exposed some of the webs in which US intelligence and deep state assets
have been involved. In other cases it's been figures associated with Right wing
academia and think-tanks. For those paying attention, the notion that the US
would collaborate with Eastern European fascists to foment unrest and achieve
strategic goals is hardly surprising. The Washington Post is not going to
venture into that territory. That's beyond the realm and mandate of Mainstream
Media.
Did this story slip through? It happens. It may have just
been some good journalism that will soon fade from memory.
Does it signal a policy change for Washington? It might. The
Right Wing might have grown too extreme and problematic for Washington's
Ukraine narrative. It may be time for triangulation, a new government,
political party or something to that effect. It could be a message to the Right
in Ukraine.... Calm down or your support is going to fade.
