Aside from the fact that Rick Warren has a less than robust
view of Scripture and is rapidly drifting into theological liberalism, and
aside from the fact that he's a corrupt political operative who befriends
millionaires and dictators, the truth is he's built his entire clerical career
based on a repudiation of Spurgeon's model of preaching and pastoral work.
Charles Spurgeon (who certainly is not above critique)
believed in the power of preaching and the fact that the Spirit worked through
this means. There was a bit of the homiletical showman about him that belies
the New Testament notion of the 'foolishness' of preaching and the fact that
Paul did not ornament his delivery with rhetorical flourish.
That said, Spurgeon was not into gimmicks. Warren on the
other hand has built his fortune and fame around such tools and methods.
Functionally denying the Sufficiency of Scripture he has turned to business and
therapeutic models and has ridden the wave of fame in the process and become
extremely wealthy.
I remember watching a rather repulsive video of Warren in his
palatial library – glorying in his shame to be sure, and seeing a portrait of
Spurgeon. It was an affront to the man's memory, but that doesn't even compare
with this.
Obviously, Spurgeon's College has completely lost its way.
The appointment of Warren to such a position is to effectively spit in the face
of Charles Spurgeon and trample his memory.
