The Christian Supreme Court of the United States

The story has already faded from the news cycle but it struck me how vigorously the Right was going after the obviously corrupt New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.

And yet how is Menendez any different from Clarence Thomas? Or for that matter someone like Donald Trump?

There have been additional revelations regarding Justice Alito and when one considers the machinations of Mitch McConnell (by many accounts considered the most corrupt senator in the US government), regarding the selection process for the Court, and in particular the appointment of Amy Coney Barrett, what can one say?

The Supreme Court (the darling of today's Christian Right which increasingly is looking to institutions like the court to overrule democratic expression) is hopelessly corrupt or at the very least lacking integrity on a massive scale.

If the money (or payoffs) and gifts weren't enough we see repeated examples of justices like Alito refusing to recuse themselves from cases – which in lower courts would be grounds for appeal. Thomas should be in prison and frankly the notion of holding him accountable is a can of worms that no one wants to open. Can you even imagine? It would send the judiciary into chaos as rulings would have to be vacated and the ensuing chaos would be playing out in the lower courts for years to come. Cash awards might have to be returned – it's hard to even conceive of the effects.

The court has now announced some kind of code of ethics but in the flawed American system there remains no way to hold justices accountable and clearly Chief Justice Roberts is not up to the task – or just as corrupt himself. People used to speak of his legacy – the legacy of The Roberts Court as something that motivated him with regard to rulings on issues like the ACA/ObamaCare. The balance he might have hoped for has been eliminated. The Roberts Court is going to be remembered for its corruption – and the role Christian political groups played in its creation and sustenance.

Fine, the world is corrupt. That's hardly a headline is it?

But this isn't just Babylon we're speaking of. This is the court that is lauded and championed by the Christian Right – both Evangelicals and Catholics celebrate this court and its supposed moral compass and conservative values. The truth is the court appears hopelessly corrupt and utterly lacking any kind of moral integrity or standing. And this corruption even overshadows the maneuverings leading to the overturn of Roe v. Wade.

As such, it is the perfect parable or representation of today's politicised Christianity which has also lost its way and has fallen into patterns of overt corruption. Embracing ethics antithetical to the New Testament the movement (typified by the court) has embraced Consequentialism – the end justifies the means and this would even include the dictum (condemned by the apostle) let us do evil that good may come.

The Christian Right and its larger project to create a Christian America has degenerated into a sick joke and the Day of the Lord will reveal that in the end they did more to serve the purposes of the enemy than the cause and Kingdom of Christ.

In the meantime they heap up shame and disgrace and give the enemies of the Lord occasion to blaspheme.
