Golden Dawn, Greece's Neo-Nazi Party has suffered significant
setbacks but it hasn't gone away. The Greek Right (as is the case in several
countries) is in a process of re-organizing, but Italy in particular has become
a rallying point with the current Right-wing coalition in power. Meloni's
Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d'Italia) represent Neo-fascism and with Lega's Salvini,
FDI also has informal ties to political movements like CasaPound and Forza
Nuova – the same folks that consider Golden Dawn to be compatriots and comrades
in arms.
At times they try to disavow their connections to these
groups and they are admittedly unofficial – but they exist nonetheless.
The European public knows about all of this and the fact that
CasaPound members demonstrate solidarity with Greek Neo-Nazis is hardly news.
CasaPound is named for the American poet Ezra Pound who was viewed (rightly or
wrongly) as a collaborator with Italian fascism. Arrested by the Americans in
1945, and facing charges of treason, he spent the next thirteen years in a
mental hospital before finally being released.
The European public follows these political movements and the
resurgence of fascism – and many are alarmed, but it's not understood in the
United States. Salvini and Meloni are championed by many Right-wing Christians.
They literally have not grasped that they are forming alliances with the direct
descendants of World War II fascism – Mussolini's granddaughter is part of
Meloni's FDI. Another granddaughter was elected under the aegis of Forza
Italia, another member of the Meloni-led coalition.
But then again, the Christian Right hasn't always understood
the GOP and its policies over the decades and the ways in which it worked
openly with WWII fascists both in Europe and in the United States during the
Cold War and after.
As such, they walked blindly into the arms of Donald Trump
and the forces behind him. It's a case of large-scale deception and judgment.
Of this I have no doubt.
