I don't believe in the American system. I've made this very clear but it continues to baffle me how these Evangelicals (and others within the orbit of the Christian Right wave their flags and step over each other to display their patriotism) have (in the Trump era) turned to actions that fundamentally undermine the system they profess to love and believe in. Everything they do testifies to the fact that if it means they lose - they don't believe in it either.
Further, they are playing a critical if not a leading role in Trumpism's campaign to sow doubt and discord about election results. It seems clear enough that the 2024 strategy was to declare an early victory, and then if it didn't pan out - sow chaos. The hope is this will lead to litigation which will end up in the Supreme Court and a victory for Trump or it will go to Congress in which case the Republican margin in the House will prove sufficient. Obviously we know now that none of this proved necessary - the feckless and weak Democratic campaign failed.
Aside from these Trumpists being anti-democratic, there is an overwhelming stench of hypocrisy, dishonesty, and corruption enveloping the actors involved - and again, the Church is playing a leading role in disseminating the narrative, legitimizing it, and stoking fear and outrage - critical to the public campaign.
I cannot bring myself to feel pity for Peters even though the judge clearly sought to make an example of her in what seems a harsh sentence. And yet given the role such officials have played in political subversion and in discrediting poll workers and the threats and danger they have subsequently faced - maybe it's appropriate. It's unlikely she will actually serve nine years.
The costs alone warrant the sentence - this in addition to her political corruption and treachery. Lindell of course - another sham Christian - belongs in the cell next to her. In addition he should be excommunicated if he does not publicly repudiate his political activities and the lies he has told.
Pastors such as the one in the story could use this story as an example to repudiate some of the claims being made - all her narratives collapsed when everything was re-tabulated. And yet she's not sorry and this pastor (in the capacity of political operative) has come to her aid. She has repeatedly couched her actions in Christian terms and believes that somehow she was fulfilling God's plan - through duplicity it would seem. This is the Evangelical ethos at work - the end justifies the means.
How far these people have strayed from the New Testament.
The story received coverage especially related to her August 2024 conviction and now the October sentencing. But I still feel like the larger story has not been properly told.
