The Incessant Politicking of Saakashvili

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy has at the very least thrown a bone to the militarists in Washington by keeping former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili in play. Charged with hiding evidence in connection with a murder, Saakashvili is wanted by the government in Tbilisi and cannot return home.

And so a few years ago he turned up in Ukraine – another one of Washington's shadow projects in the former USSR. And now successive governments have protected him and even put him into government. Former president Petro Poroshenko was a creature of Washington but he finally grew frustrated with the rogue Georgian and stripped him of his citizenship.
The comedian Zelenskiy was more of a question mark as he came into office. Many feared his oligarchical connections even as he ran on an anti-corruption platform. But Washington's fears at least on this point were assuaged as Zelenskiy restored Saakashvili's Ukrainian citizenship – and now Saakashvili is back in Ukrainian government once more.
Saakashvili obviously has some powerful friends. While in exile from both Ukraine and Georgia he made his home in the United States. He lost an ally with the death of John McCain but obviously there are others who have taken up the war drum in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
His resiliency is amazing. He just keeps turning up – obviously someone believes in him and believes he can make a difference. He certainly did all he could to back the US-sponsored Euromaidan coup in 2014 and as the American Deep State's man in Ukraine, he may still have a role to play. In the meantime he'll continue lobbying for Washington's policies and for the expansion of NATO.
