One would love to know more about the protests and whether or
not money is being spread around. It is in Washington's interest that Latin
America turns away from China and if such unrest happens to topple the
Kirchner-affiliated government of Alberto Fernandez – there will be
celebrations in both the State Department and on Wall Street.
Like Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and now Bolivia, Argentina is
caught in a tug-of-war between American-backed Rightist forces and the various
remnants of the so-called Pink Tide which first came to power about twenty
years ago. While these governments don't necessarily possess some kind of great
love for China they are desperate to break Washington's stranglehold on their
politics and economy.
And so it's not too hard to imagine that American interests
are fomenting the protests. It wouldn't be the first time such tactics have
been utilised.
The 'level playing field' statements made by the US State Department official are laughable. It's an old line used by those who don't want a level playing field at all but one in which the balance tilts favourably toward US interests and one in which the US corporate sector can dominate.
