US Manipulation of Cuba Protests

https://www.mintpressnews.com/documents-point-to-us-hand-in-cuba-protests/277987/

Once again we find the hand of USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) at work, doing what they do best - labouring to subvert democracy and overthrow governments. As soon as the protests erupted and voices within the US started escalating the rhetoric, it wasn't hard to guess what was happening. And though things have seemingly calmed down, it's not over yet.

On the Democratic side you have the Humanitarian Imperialists who believe American values (which they happen to profit from) should be spread at the point of a gun - demonstrating their own failure to understand the social foundation needed for democracy to work, foundations that are increasingly revealed as lacking in the American context.

The GOP for its part is always happy to embrace militarism and also is committed to making the world safe for Wall Street. In the case of the Cuban protests, their main motivation is to seize the political moment and criticise the Biden administration for not being more aggressive.

Biden certainly signed off on support for the Cuban protests. And I have no doubt he supports the movement but if there isn't enough of a street or grass-roots base to seriously challenge the government, there's no way he's simply going to wade into the situation and tear the country apart.

And as I explained in an article last month (linked below), the situation with Cuba is a bit different. There's a lot of history there with regard to Cuba-US relations. If the regime is perceived as being overthrown by Washington, the legacy of the Castros and their narrative will live on.

While Biden would like to see regime change in Havana he's not going to push the situation and create a crisis near his border - and one that he doesn't need right now. It would also create a situation that American enemies would be quick to utilise and fuel.

That said, if the US can help foster an uprising, they certainly will.

It's also noteworthy how American liberal politics - which are often decried as 'communistic' by the American Right, actually are in conflict the values and ideals of a genuine communist society. American identity politics are not compatible with communism. They are expressions of hyper-individualism rooted in middle class privilege and frankly more often than not, individualist decadence. They do not work on a Marxist basis. On the contrary they subvert the very foundations of Marxism by re-casting societal ills in non-economic terms. The various groups seeking to be 'empowered' represent no threat to the capitalist order. On the contrary they wish to appropriate it and wield its power to strengthen their hands.

The article also correctly points out that the socio-economic situation in Cuba is further complicated by decades of US sanctions and the failures and 'shock' brought about by recent reforms - many of which moved the Cuban economy toward a capitalist orientation. No one (except perhaps members of the GOP) wants to see Cuba fall into a 1990's Russia-type scenario in which capitalism destabilised the society and led to massive corruption. Such events could quickly take the Caribbean island in directions contrary and even hostile to US interests.
