Obviously the Bible is the ultimate standard. But we don't
live in a vacuum. Our ideas are deeply imbedded and without realizing it many
of the categories we embrace stem from extra-Scriptural thinking.
A key part of Sanctification is the 'renewal of the mind'.
We are regenerated but we are also being regenerated and we need to learn to
think through... everything.
Otherwise our Faith is not in the Christ of Scripture but in
our Faith itself.
As I've said before, I don't leave a congregation because
they use instruments. Rather the use of instrumentation reveals some basic
theological assumptions regarding the gathering of the Church as well as the
hermeneutics being employed.
How are they reading the Bible? Or perhaps not reading it?
How are they relating the Old and New Testaments?
Are they trying to be Scriptural...everyone claims to be...
or are they in reality just following tradition?
The interesting thing is when it comes to issues like this
and there are many more....not only can a strong Scriptural case be made, but
even history is not really on their side.
In many ways I'm arguing vigorously against historical
Christianity. On this point I greatly differ with the conscientious historical
identification and narratives employed by most Protestants.
However I do not wish to divorce myself from historical
context or ignore history. Far from it. We have much to learn. Sometimes we can
learn as much from error as we can from positive construction.
Things to consider.
