Romania and Spain were the last of the European nations to avoid a return to Right-wing politics. Spain spent decades under Franco and only returned to democracy in the late 1970's and early 1980's. Romania had been under fascist rule during World War II and then fell under communism for the duration of the Cold War. Since then it has emerged and while always battling corruption and other issues, the Right was kept at bay.
But that's all changed. Vox has arisen in Spain and clearly it's star is ascendant. We'll see what happens with the snap election set for the end of November 2026.
In Romania, the Right's opposition to the EU and NATO have pegged it as a front for Russian interests.
In this case, the EU-connected outlet Politico is distressed over the prospect of the Centre-Left Socialists (PSD) forming a coalition with the Right-wing AUR. It would create a formidable bloc and create a real headache for Brussels as both parties (in different ways) represent a rejection of the larger EU agenda and programme. The PSD is somewhat unique in its platform which truly mixes Left-wing populism with cultural positions that trend toward the conservative. It's considered to be mildly Eurosceptic and so this potential coalition sounds an alarm in Brussels (HQ for the EU and NATO).
Romanian politics are in gridlock since the election was cancelled at the end of 2024. After Calin Georgescu was banned from running, a second election took place in May of 2025, but so far no viable government has been formed. If this fails, the president Nicușor Dan will have to call for new elections - which everyone suspects will only lead to increased seats for the Right-wing AUR.
According to reports, the majority of Romanian Evangelicals support the Centre-Right PNL with its Christian Democratic platform. However, it's nor surprising to discover that more and more are flirting with the Right-wing AUR. Given the tone and tenor of American Evangelicalism, MAGA Christianity, and the like - it's something we should expect to see. Thus far the AUR seems to garner its greatest amount of support from within the Orthodox community. Ethnic Romanian Evangelicals may get caught up in this kind of extreme nationalism, but the Hungarian and German Evangelicals are less likely to find anything attractive about the AUR.
A lot of people will be watching to see how things turn and for my part I'm interested in seeing if Romanian Christians fall into some of these same traps that we've seen ensnare 'conservative' Christians in places like the United States.
