We can remain hopeful that interviews such as this will bring
these people down. What a shame and disgrace.
Are these folks true believers in Donald Trump or are they so
utterly blinded by the partisan nature of American politics that they feel the
need to defend at all costs a man who in the 1980s represented everything their
movement was supposed to be against.
Falwell Jr. is ironically a perfect representation of what
happens to the Church which it confused the Kingdom of God with the kingdoms of
this world. It all started with his father who compromised his principles to
stand behind Ronald Reagan. The Gipper couldn't quite pass for a Christian and
the astrologer wife didn't help, but he sounded good... if a bit simple. He
stayed out of the way and took naps while he let others run the administration.
But then comes Trump. There's no dressing him up. He's vile
and anyone who was old enough to watch the news in the 1980s remembers him as a
crude and base tabloid sensation. He's Biff Tannen in the dystopian chapter of
Back to the Future II. He's about the last person in the world you would expect
Christians to back... but here we are.
I had hoped maybe this would be over the line and it would
foment some real debate and yes, division. But apart from the witch-hunt to
burn Russell Moore at the stake, there's been little activity. Moore who by the
way hardly represents a dissident position, it's simply Trump was a step too
far and he was concerned over the abandon with which Christians seemed to
embrace him.
If Trump wounds the American empire I will hardly shed tears
and yet I wonder to what degree he will even accomplish that.
But once again... what does this all mean for the Church?
That's the question that continues to vex me and makes me wonder how many
people in order to remain faithful, end up (sadly) staying home on Sunday
morning. That's a tragedy and one I lay on the shoulders of someone like
Falwell Jr., a wolf if there ever was one, a disgrace to the name of Christ.
It's because of people like Falwell and Huckabee that I cringe to call myself a
Christian.
Falwell has lost his mind. He represents the extreme degenerate form of Sacralist thought... he's completely lost sight of what Christianity is all about. Why would he invite Scaramucci to speak at Liberty? This man is not repentant, not a Christian... what does Falwell think he has to say... other than cheerlead Trump?
