An ICBM test turned into a propaganda point

Several times today I heard an example of irresponsible news reporting.

The Russians just tested an ICBM and of course this made the news because of the current crisis in Ukraine... or 'the' Ukraine depending on your politics.

Russia and the United States are obligated by treaty to report these tests to each other. The Americans knew about this test since December. It's been delayed a couple of times due to some technical problems, but they were notified again that the test would be taking place.

Some still view this as provocative because of the current geopolitical standoff. If true, the United States can't really say anything. They have a long tradition of engaging in joint military exercises at key moments to irritate North Korea, China or some other adversary. It's an old tactic, a means of sticking your finger in your opponent's eye.

Is Putin guilty at this point? Perhaps, but it's hard to be dogmatic considering the test was scheduled.

But to report the story without reporting the additional information is just plain irresponsible and can only be meant to stir fear.

I cannot say I was surprised to hear these reports coming from the so-called Christian news media.

The truth is Putin should be a hero to the Christian Right. His policies are supporting his cultural version of Christianity and its moral code and he's standing up for both law and order and his country's prestige on the international stage. He's exactly what they would want in a leader.
