The ÖVP has introduced its first attempt at nationalist
legislation. They're not the first to do so, but others have backed down. The
Austrian Right is trying to keep Austrian money within Austria which of course
undermines the larger EU project and the authority of Brussels.
Figures like Juncker and Tusk are being tested and it will
bear watching to see how they fare in this what is now largely a bureaucratic
struggle.
Wow, will we actually see Austria and Hungary form a new
anti-Brussels bloc?... with Poland and some of the Balkan nations in tow? The
historical parallels are fascinating.
Here's a link to a background piece on HC Strache, the leader of the FPO, the junior partner in the coalition government with the OVP. Strache is now the Vice-Chancellor of Austria.

This is convenient for the ruling powers atop the EU. They too want to stop Turkey's accession to the EU. Austria and the other right-wing political groups can voice the position... and then take the flak for it.
