It was a rare moment of Trump-era unity as Turkey has become the
pariah state in NATO. Democrats and Republicans, NATO allies and the
Neo-Conservative elements within Washington – everyone could rally around
Pompeo's condemnations of Erdogan.
Pompeo will be forever associated with Donald Trump and yet
he's not Trump and so riding that wave will take him only so far. As one who
wishes to continue his political career – seeking a senate seat, or more likely
a governorship and ultimately the presidency – he must leave the Trump
administration on a positive unifying note and this was his moment to do so. It
was a moment that seemingly took courage and yet in reality required none. But
certainly he hopes that it establishes him as a mainstream figure, one who
operates within the consensus and one willing to stand up for it.
Pompeo has already demonstrated his lack of moral fibre, his
hypocrisy and his tainted sense of ethics. But none of this matters. If he'll
toe the line then he'll be accepted. This was part of his laying the groundwork
for his rehabilitation. He'll simply need to choose his course carefully as I'm
sure he's already mapping out his options. Though it's a sad thing to report,
he will undoubtedly be able to garner large sections of the Evangelical vote
and he will continue to build his resume looking ahead to the White House in 2024
or 2028.
A scion of the Heritage Foundation he will certainly have its
considerable backing. He may choose to take a victory lap and cash in for a
season, sitting on boards and giving lucrative speeches. He'll certainly
produce a book of some kind. But I look for him to jump back into the political
ring by either 2022 or 2024. The logical step would be the gubernatorial race
in Kansas in 2022 – he would be running against a Democrat. And then he could
break from that office and run for president in 2024 or if the time is right –
2028.
Why do I care about Pompeo? I don't. He's a vile, deceived
person – a heretic, thief, and murderer, but his star is rising and as an influential
member of the Evangelical community he bears watching. For good or ill his name
will be bandied about and he will be on the minds of people sitting in the
pews. And so we need to watch....
