The particulars of the vote are a little tricky, but essentially VOX engineered the passage of this bill which only allows for public facilities to be utilised by groups that are approved by the local authority, groups which fit their conceptions of Spanish identity. Clearly some are tying this in with Christianity, specifically to counter Islam.
This is taking place in a local municipality but you can be sure it's spurring discussion on a nationwide basis. This kind of legislation is reminiscent of Francoism and the authoritarian attempt to enforce conformity. Dissent (if permitted at all) was relegated to second-class status. That's the goal here - not to drive Muslims out, at least not yet. First, they have to marginalised. Of course under Franco this extended to all non-Catholics.
The Spanish Constitution of 1978 (Franco died in 1975) guarantees freedom of religion and as such this new law will be challenged in court. It's likely to be rejected by the upper courts, but these moves send out a warning shot, they signal the larger agenda being pursued by VOX and the Right. Spain hasn't made the right-ward turn we've seen in some other countries, but the securing of parliamentary seats by VOX in 2019 marked a turning point. And now fifty years after Franco's death, the same fascistic impulses are resurgent and operating in the open. There will be much more to come.
Sadly, VOX is preying on Evangelicals with its appeal to traditional Christian values and yet this is deceptive as it weds these ideals to vicious and vile tribalist anti-immigration policies, ultra-nationalism, and neo-liberal economics. But given that exported American 'worldview' teaching has effectively integrated these unbiblical notions to Christian thought, few will be disturbed. The heresy that is American Evangelicalism continues to spread around the world.
