It was no surprise to learn that Trump was upset that he didn't get the Nobel Peace Prize. He obviously had his heart set on it. The truth is, he doesn't deserve it. This is just part of his normal pattern of delusional sociopathic thinking. In fact his Abraham Accords (from his first term) largely set the stage for the Hamas attacks in October 2023. While the war began under Biden, Trump allowed it to continue and pushed for GOP support prior to his taking office in January 2025 and since then. He and Biden have the blood of tens of thousands on their hands. The fact that he was able to get Netanyahu to stop (against his own political interests) demonstrates that he always had the power to do so. Instead he armed Israel as it slaughtered thousands upon thousands of Palestinians and laid waste to Gaza.
For my part, I find it hard to believe Netanyahu won't find a way to argue the terms have been violated and re-start the bombing and blockage. His Kahanist-affiliated coalition will not accept anything less. If his fascistic coalition collapses, he's facing removal and indictment. And the minute the fighting stops, even if his coalition holds, the street protests and pressure campaign are likely to start again. The Butcher of Gaza wants to avoid removal and potential prison due to his corruption (not his war crimes). The war is his way to keep kicking the can down the road. The idea that any of these people should somehow be praised for their peace efforts is itself an outrage. The fact that a war criminal like Netanyahu would praise Trump for his diplomatic efforts smells rotten to say the least.
Butchers such as Trump do not deserve peace prizes - and he is as much a butcher as Netanyahu even if he's a step removed. He enabled it, sanctioned it, and gave his blessing.
All that said, the Nobel committee has already discredited itself many times over. From the absurd award given to Obama who proceeded to wage war by means of Kill Lists, the destruction of Libya, and the fomenting of civil war in Syria, there were also many Palestinians slaughtered under his tenure. Another absurd peace prize award was that of Kissinger in the wake of the Paris Peace Accords in 1973. Kissinger was one of the guilty parties in the mass murder that was the Indochina Wars - and further as Le Duc Tho pointed out, the war was not over. It was simply the beginning of the end for the US role. Further, there was the great deception that took place regarding the release of POW's - the Nixon Administration failed to meet the terms and North Vietnam did not finish releasing prisoners as a result. But of course the Nixon administration lied about it in order to save face and move on. The fact that Kissinger took a victory lap by receiving the prize reveals the lack of integrity that characterized his person.
Many have tried to work through the reasoning of the Nobel Committee in choosing Venezuela's Maria Corina Machado. Was this an attempt to throw a bone to Trump - by picking a supporter and someone who actively supports his violent campaign to trick Venezuela into war? How can you think of Machado in 2025 and not think of the US dropping bombs on boats off the Venezuelan coast? As Marco Rubio has long been the driving force for regime change in Caracas, not a few view Machado as his tool.
Machado is hardly a peace activist or someone working for peace. She's part of a larger campaign the US has been running for over twenty years to remove not only Hugo Chavez but his legacy - which includes Nicolas Maduro. Whether you admire Machado as some kind of democracy activist (which is dubious) - how is she qualified to receive the peace prize?
Basically she wants a violent overthrow (and was willing to encourage Israel to invade and help) and she's been candid in her open calls for Venezuela to become of toy of Wall Street through mass privatisation.
Blumenthal's analysis is correct - the prize is an endorsement of the regime change operation the US has recently escalated. Of all the outrageous things connected with Machado, I was struck by the fact that she even endorsed Trump's shipment of Venezuelan immigrants to the (accurately identified) torture camps in El Salvador.
The end result is once again, the Nobel Committee has destroyed its own credibility and standing. The Peace Prize is given to someone advocating war and destruction - once again Orwell's art is true to life. You can't make this stuff up. But the reason it's effective is very simple - the mainstream media in the US won't report it. In fact they actively participate in the white-wash.
